UN Reports 5,500 Gender Violence Cases in Haiti This Year

United Nations: More than 5,500 cases of gender-based violence have been reported in Haiti during the first half of 2026, with the United Nations warning that worsening insecurity and mass displacement are driving a sharp rise in attacks on women and girls.

The UN said around 70 per cent of the reported cases involved rape, many of them gang rapes allegedly carried out by armed groups. More than half of the victims were people displaced by the country's ongoing violence.

According to the UN, over 3,000 incidents were recorded between April and June, including more than 1,000 cases in June alone, highlighting what officials described as an alarming increase in gender-based violence.

The latest figures mark a significant rise compared with last year, when just over 8,000 cases were recorded throughout the entire year.

Haiti has been gripped by years of political instability and escalating gang violence, with armed groups blamed for widespread killings, kidnappings, looting and attacks on civilians.

The UN said nearly 1.5 million people have been displaced across the country, while more than five million are facing severe food insecurity.

International efforts to curb the violence have had limited success. A Kenya-led security mission, which has now been restructured into a Gang Suppression Force with expanded powers, continues to support Haitian authorities in tackling armed gangs.
