FIFA proposal offers choice, not compulsion: Infantino

Zurich: FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the governing body's latest plan should be viewed as ‘an opportunity, not an obligation,’ emphasising that member bodies, leagues, and clubs will not be forced to participate and will be able to choose what best serves their interests.

Infantino stated that FIFA's goal is to provide new prospects for football growth, increase revenue for the sport, and broaden its worldwide impact while respecting the authority of national associations and competition organisers. He noted that the concept is intended to help individuals who choose to participate rather than imposing new obligations on anyone.

His comments come amid persistent criticism of FIFA's expanded competition calendar, with various leagues, clubs, and player unions warning that an increase in the number of matches will create fixture congestion, raise the risk of injury, and put more physical and mental pressure on players. Some stakeholders have also questioned the business motives driving the governing body's recent measures.

Infantino defended FIFA's approach, stating that the organisation remained dedicated to consulting all stakeholders before making substantial changes. He stated that the continuous growth of football should generate opportunities throughout the game while also protecting the interests of players, clubs, leagues, and national associations.
