Widow of Slain Mexican Mayor Arrested in Extortion Probe

Mexico City: Mexican officials have arrested the widow of Temoac Mayor Valentín Lavín and the city police chief in an investigation into an alleged extortion network, only days after the mayor was gunned down during a town hall meeting in the central state of Morelos. Prosecutors identified the accused as Marisol ‘N’ and Geovany Emmanuel ‘N,’ and said they were arrested as part of the country's anti-extortion campaign. Officials have not confirmed if the arrests are directly related to Lavín's murder.
On July 22, Lavín, an associate of President Claudia Sheinbaum's ruling coalition, was shot dead inside the Temoac municipal headquarters. He had previously survived an assassination attempt.
Authorities are looking into multiple possible motives, including alleged connections between organised crime and municipal politicians. Kidnappings, extortion, and gang violence have long afflicted Morelos, which is south of Mexico City. Nearly 100 Mexican mayors have been killed since 2006, according to official statistics, highlighting the nation's ongoing security crisis.
