Tokyo: Japan has lifted a tsunami alert after a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Kyushu region, leaving several people injured, damaging buildings and disrupting transport and power supplies.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the quake caused injuries, building collapses and fires, while around 40,000 homes lost electricity. Rail services were suspended, Kumamoto Airport was temporarily closed, and mobile phone networks were disrupted in parts of the affected region.
The Japan Meteorological Agency lifted the tsunami alert less than two hours after it was issued, saying the immediate threat had passed. Authorities, however, warned residents to remain vigilant for strong aftershocks and possible landslides over the coming days.
Emergency teams continue to assess the full extent of the damage, while officials said there were no abnormalities reported at nearby nuclear facilities.
