Johnson & Johnson offers $5.5 bn to settle talc cancer lawsuits

California: Johnson & Johnson has proposed a $5.5 billion settlement to resolve approximately 76,000 remaining lawsuits alleging its talcum powder products caused ovarian cancer and other illnesses, marking one of the company's biggest efforts to end years of litigation.
The healthcare giant said the agreement would settle nearly all outstanding talc-related claims, although it continues to deny that its products caused cancer.
The company argues that the allegations lack scientific merit and says resolving the cases will allow it to focus on developing medicines and medical devices.
Johnson & Johnson stopped selling its talc-based baby powder in the United States and Canada in 2020 but continues to face legal challenges elsewhere.
The company is also defending a lawsuit in the United Kingdom, where claimants are seeking more than £1 billion in compensation over similar allegations involving ovarian cancer and mesothelioma.
