Bogota: The Colombian military has rescued 39 civilians, including a minor, who were abducted by the National Liberation Army (ELN) when they stopped on a highway in the remote Chocó region. The victims, who travelled by bus, were released following a military operation after several hours in custody.

General Hugo López verified the rescue, adding all 39 captives had been released. However, two Colombian soldiers were killed in the operation. Chocó, which borders Panama, remains one of the country's most conflict-ridden areas, with the ELN maintaining a strong presence and frequently clashing with security forces.

The tragedy highlights Colombia's continued security concerns, despite previous peace efforts. The ELN, the country's oldest active guerrilla group, continues to fund its operations through drug trafficking and kidnapping, while the new administration has promised harder measures against armed insurgent groups.
