Geneva: The emerging El Niño climate pattern is expected to intensify into a strong occurrence by September, raising the danger of extreme weather in many parts of the world, according to a warning from the UN meteorological agency.
El Niño conditions have already formed in the tropical Pacific, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and are predicted to bring high global temperatures, drought in some areas, and torrential rainfall and flooding in others. Public health, water resources, and agriculture are all anticipated to be impacted by the occurrence.
Seasonal forecasts, according to the organization, show below-normal rainfall over most of Australia and the Indian subcontinent, but above-normal rainfall may occur in some areas, such as the southwestern United States.
WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo urged states to develop early warning systems and preparatory measures to mitigate the impact on lives, livelihoods and economies. The organization stated that while El Niño is a normal climatic pattern, its effects are being magnified by rising global temperatures.
