Jakarta : A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia on Friday, causing panic among residents but resulting in no immediate reports of casualties or damage, according to Indonesian authorities and the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 120 kilometres and was centred about 58 kilometres west of Tobelo in North Maluku province. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the quake did not pose a tsunami threat.
Indonesia is among the world's most earthquake-prone countries because it lies on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' a seismically active zone that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Ocean. The country frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity due to the movement of tectonic plates.
