Brussels: Europe's most severe heatwave on record continued to spread east on Monday, setting new temperature records and forcing Ukraine to impose emergency power cuts as electricity demand surged.
Slovakia recorded a new national high of 41°C, while Hungary reached 41.8°C, just below its all-time record. Authorities across the region urged people to stay indoors, work from home where possible and take precautions against the extreme heat.
Ukraine announced emergency power outages after the heat placed additional strain on an electricity grid already damaged by years of Russian attacks.
Scientists said the heatwave would have been virtually impossible this early in the summer without climate change. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1,300 excess deaths have been linked to the heatwave since June 21, while wildfires, power disruptions and drowning incidents have been reported across several countries.
Although temperatures have begun easing in parts of western Europe, forecasters warned another heatwave could arrive in July.
