Manila: Thousands of members of the influential Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) religious group protested in the Philippine capital on Tuesday against the probable arrest of Senator Rodante Marcoleta, a close supporter of Vice President Sara Duterte, on graft accusations.

Officials said Marcoleta will face accusations for allegedly neglecting to declare 75 million pesos (about US$1.2 million) in unused campaign contributions from the 2025 elections. Police estimated that over 8,000 protestors had assembled in Manila, causing serious traffic problems, with more expected to join during the day.

The INC leaders described the protest as a cry for justice and transparency, accusing the government of politically targeting Duterte's allies. Also, Marcoleta is likely to be a crucial witness in the Senate impeachment trial of Sara Duterte, which starts next week.

The incident occurs amid growing political turmoil in the Philippines, where several people associated with former President Rodrigo Duterte are facing legal action. Security was tightened throughout Manila while officials monitored the protest.
