London:Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Britain's prime minister and leader of the Labour Party, setting the stage for a leadership contest that could deliver the country its seventh prime minister in a decade.
In an emotional statement outside Downing Street, Starmer said he would remain in office until Labour selects a new leader. He expressed gratitude to his wife and children, describing his family as a source of strength throughout his time in office.
The outgoing prime minister said he hopes the leadership race can be completed before Parliament returns in September, allowing for a smooth transition of power.
Attention is already turning to potential successors, with Andy Burnham emerging as a leading contender after securing victory in a key by-election that paved the way for his return to Parliament. Under Labour rules, party leaders must be sitting MPs.
Starmer's departure follows months of mounting pressure over Labour's declining popularity and a series of political setbacks. His resignation opens a new chapter for the governing party as it seeks to rebuild support and chart its direction ahead of the next general election.
The leadership contest is expected to dominate British politics in the coming weeks, with Labour members and lawmakers set to choose who will lead both the party and the government.
