UN Aid Chief Says Gazans Need Dignity, Not Just Survival

United Nations:Palestinians in Gaza deserve more than basic survival and must be allowed to live with dignity, United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher told the UN Security Council as he called for greater humanitarian access to the territory.

While acknowledging that aid deliveries have increased since the Israel-Hamas ceasefire took effect in October, Fletcher said current assistance levels remain far below what is needed. About 100 aid shipments are entering Gaza each day, but he described this as only the minimum required.

Fletcher urged Israel to open all border crossings into Gaza and immediately remove restrictions on essential supplies, including fuel and medical equipment. He stressed that ending violence alone is not enough if people remain hungry, homeless and without access to education.

Addressing the Security Council, Fletcher said the international community should aim to restore dignity and normal life for Palestinians, rather than simply keeping them alive.

Bushra Khalidi of Oxfam also appealed to UN member states to act with urgency and humanity to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
