Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday on Sunday by announcing progress toward a peace agreement with Iran and hosting an unprecedented UFC event on the White House South Lawn.
Trump said an initial agreement aimed at ending the conflict with Iran had been completed, including provisions for a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, although key details still need to be negotiated in the coming weeks.
The diplomatic development came as the White House staged a large-scale mixed martial arts event as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. The temporary arena featured the UFC's Octagon beneath a massive structure known as 'The Claw,' drawing thousands of spectators and senior political figures, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
Trump, accompanied by UFC president Dana White, made several appearances throughout the evening, interacting with fighters and guests. Many victorious athletes thanked the president during post-fight interviews, while some used the platform to express political views.
The event blended entertainment, politics and patriotism in a way rarely seen at the White House, underscoring Trump's close ties with the UFC and his efforts to link the spectacle to broader celebrations of America's upcoming 250th anniversary.
However, the day was not without controversy. A federal court ruling led to the removal of Trump's name from the Kennedy Center in Washington, while critics questioned the appropriateness of hosting a cage-fighting event at the presidential residence.
Despite the criticism, the White House gathering proceeded into the early hours of Monday, capping an extraordinary day that combined diplomacy abroad with an unprecedented display of sporting entertainment at the heart of American political power.
