US President Donald Trump will participate in a G7 working session alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during next week's summit in France, a senior US administration official has confirmed.
The session is scheduled for Tuesday morning during the G7 Summit in Evian, which runs from June 15 to 17. While both leaders will be present at the meeting, officials said no formal bilateral talks between Trump and Zelensky are currently planned.
The official noted that an informal discussion between the two leaders could still take place on the sidelines of the summit.
Series of High-Level Meetings Planned
Trump is expected to hold separate meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron as well as the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and India during the summit.
Following the conclusion of the gathering, Trump is scheduled to attend a dinner hosted by Macron at the Palace of Versailles near Paris. The event will commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence and highlight the historic ties between France and the United States.
According to the French presidency, the venue was chosen because the 1783 treaty recognizing US independence was signed there.
Ukraine and Iran Expected to Dominate Agenda
The ongoing war in Ukraine and the conflict involving Iran are expected to be among the most pressing issues discussed by world leaders.
Although Trump previously emphasized efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, attention has increasingly shifted toward developments in the Middle East following military confrontations involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
A senior administration official described Trump as uniquely positioned to help bring an end to the war in Ukraine, though no details were provided on any potential diplomatic initiative.
Strait of Hormuz Security Concerns
Leaders are also expected to discuss security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for global energy supplies.
According to US officials, discussions may include the possible involvement of France and the United Kingdom in mine-clearing operations in the strategic waterway, which has seen significant disruption due to regional tensions.
NATO, Trade and AI on Summit Agenda
The summit will also feature discussions on NATO burden-sharing, global trade, artificial intelligence, immigration, innovation and energy security.
US officials sought to ease concerns about tensions between Washington and its NATO allies, saying discussions on defence spending have been constructive and that allies are increasingly contributing more to collective security.
Trade is also expected to feature prominently, with officials welcoming France's decision to place trade imbalances on the summit agenda.
The Group of Seven (G7) consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Trump has previously voiced support for bringing Russia back into the group, restoring the former G8 format.
