Concerns Grow Over Future of Franco-German Tank Project

Berlin: Germany's Rheinmetall has expressed concern that France could withdraw from a joint project to develop a next-generation battle tank, following the collapse of a separate Franco-German fighter jet programme.

Rheinmetall chief executive Armin Papperger said there was a risk to the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) project, although no final decision had been made. The programme, involving Rheinmetall, Franco-German defence group KNDS and France's Thales, is intended to replace Germany's Leopard 2 and France's Leclerc tanks by around 2040.

According to Papperger, France is considering significant budget reductions for the project, potentially cutting planned spending by more than half. He warned that any reduction in funding could lead to further delays for a programme that is already behind schedule.

The concerns come days after the cancellation of the Franco-German Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a next-generation fighter jet initiative that had been seen as a key symbol of European defence cooperation.

Reports have also suggested difficulties within the multinational Eurodrone project, raising broader questions about the future of major European defence partnerships amid competing national interests and budget pressures.
