Clashes Erupt in DR Congo Over Fears of Presidential Term Extension

Kinshasa: Rival political groups clashed in the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital on Friday during a protest against proposed constitutional changes that critics say could allow President Felix Tshisekedi to remain in power beyond his current term.
The demonstration, organised by the opposition coalition C64 outside parliament in Kinshasa, was dispersed by police using tear gas after violence broke out between opposition supporters and pro-government activists. Opposition leader Martin Fayulu was among those injured, while fellow opposition figure Prince Epenge also sustained minor injuries.
The unrest comes amid growing concern over a bill being considered by lawmakers that would permit amendments to presidential term limits during periods of major institutional dysfunction. Opponents argue that the proposal could pave the way for Tshisekedi to seek a third term, despite constitutional restrictions.
Tshisekedi, who began his second five-year term in 2023, has said he would accept another term if approved by the Congolese people through a referendum. His comments have united several opposition parties under the C64 coalition, which has vowed to resist any attempt to extend his stay in office.
The political tensions are unfolding as the country grapples with multiple challenges, including a worsening Ebola outbreak and escalating violence involving Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in the east. Opposition leaders have warned that altering presidential term limits could further destabilise the conflict-hit nation.
