Muzaffarabad: Multiple sources say that the death toll from recent skirmishes in Pakistan-administered Kashmir has grown to at least 20 persons, amid rising protests and a harsh government crackdown.
The turmoil is linked to demonstrations organised by the outlawed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which has been protesting issues such as allocated legislative seats for Kashmiri refugees and larger political and economic grievances. Violence erupted in Rawalakot and other regions after protestors clashed with security personnel.
Earlier reports had put the death toll lower, but the total has risen as more casualties are confirmed as a result of ongoing clashes and the aftermath of the operation.
Tensions remain high, with civil society and rights organisations urging caution and discussion to avoid further escalation.
