Oslo: The world recorded 65 state-based conflicts in 2025, the highest number since 1946, according to a new report by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

The study found that around 245,000 people were killed in conflict-related violence last year, making 2025 the third-deadliest year since the Cold War. Major state-to-state conflicts included Russia-Ukraine, India-Pakistan, Afghanistan-Pakistan and Cambodia-Thailand, while Israel was involved in multiple conflicts, including those linked to Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Yemen.

Researchers said conflicts are becoming more complex, with countries increasingly involved in multiple wars at the same time. Africa was the region most affected by state-based conflicts.

The report also recorded a sharp rise in attacks on civilians, with nearly 76,500 deaths linked to such violence in 2025. Researchers warned that overlapping wars and prolonged fighting are driving global conflict levels to unprecedented highs.
