A powerful earthquake struck waters off the western coast of Cuba on Monday evening, prompting authorities to monitor the situation, although no immediate reports of casualties or major damage were received.

According to seismic monitoring agencies, the earthquake measured between 6.1 and 6.4 in magnitude. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the tremor occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time and was centred around 118 kilometres west-northwest of the town of Mantua in Cuba’s Pinar del Río province.

The USGS said the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 33 kilometres beneath the seabed.

Meanwhile, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences recorded the quake at a magnitude of 6.1 and initially estimated its depth at 10 kilometres. The agency located the epicentre in waters off Cuba’s western coastline.

Emergency and civil defence authorities continued to assess the situation and gather information from affected areas. No tsunami warnings or significant disruptions were immediately reported.

Cuba is located near the boundary between the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates, an area known for periodic seismic activity and occasional earthquakes.

Authorities urged residents to follow official updates as assessments continue.
