Manila: At least three people were killed and five others injured after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, triggering tsunami warnings across parts of the Pacific region and causing damage to dozens of buildings.
The earthquake hit near General Santos City at 07:37 local time and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to authorities. The strong tremor was felt across a wide area, prompting emergency evacuations and tsunami alerts in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan.
Officials said tsunami waves of up to 1.4 metres were recorded along Mindanao's southern coastline. Most tsunami warnings issued after the quake have since been lifted, though authorities continue to monitor coastal areas for any further risks.
The disaster agency reported 138 aftershocks following the main quake, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 6.7. Emergency teams were deployed to assess damage and assist affected communities.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable coastal areas to remain cautious and move to higher ground if instructed, as aftershocks continue.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr ordered an immediate government response, directing national and local agencies to provide assistance, assess infrastructure damage and support rescue and relief operations in the affected regions.
The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently.
