US warns Ebola outbreak on the scale of largest 'is possible'

WASHINGTON DC: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that the current Central Africa Ebola outbreak could reach a historic scale, potentially rivaling the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic that resulted in 28,646 cases and 11,323 deaths.

While current computer modeling suggests the crisis could exceed 20,000 cases within three months if isolation levels remain low, officials stress these projections are planning tools, not inevitable forecasts.

To avert a worst-case scenario, the CDC emphasizes the urgent need for a massive public health response, focusing on the identification, isolation, and treatment of patients.

Currently, there are 397 confirmed cases across the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, with 65 total deaths. In response to the escalating threat, the World Health Organization and the Africa CDC have launched a $518 million emergency plan.

Experts maintain that immediate, large-scale international coordination is critical to breaking transmission chains and preventing further spread of the virus.
