Air Canada suspends Cuba operations 'indefinitely'

ONTARIO: Air Canada has announced the indefinite suspension of all operations to Cuba, citing ongoing political and economic uncertainty on the island. The decision follows intensifying pressure from the United States, including a fuel embargo that has crippled local infrastructure.
The Montreal-based carrier stated that the move aims to provide customers with greater certainty about future travel prospects, following a temporary pause announced in February.
Cuba is currently facing severe crises, including daily power outages lasting up to 22 hours and critical shortages of food, medicine, and tap water. The fuel embargo, in place since January, has left the island reliant on aid shipments from Mexico and China.
The collapse of the tourism sector, once bolstered by Canadian visitors, mirrors the recent closure of 62 properties by Blue Diamond Resorts. While Canada has modestly increased humanitarian aid, the total suspension of flights marks a significant shift in regional connectivity.
