Ohio : Ohio State University has approved a $100 million settlement with 279 former students who accused former campus doctor Richard Strauss of sexual abuse between 1978 and 1998.
The settlement, ratified by the university's board on Wednesday, follows years of litigation over claims that the university failed to protect students from Strauss, who worked with the athletic department and medical staff before retiring in 1998. He died by suicide in 2005.
Earlier this year, Ohio State settled with eight other survivors, bringing the total number of compensated victims to 304 and total payouts to more than $160 million.
A 2019 investigation found that Strauss sexually abused at least 177 male students and that university officials who were aware of concerns failed to act. The findings prompted more than 500 former students and athletes to sue the university.
While the latest settlement resolves claims for most survivors involved, many continue to seek a formal apology and accountability from university leaders.
