US Proposes Global Tariffs Following Forced Labor Probe

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has unveiled a proposal to impose import tariffs of at least 10 percent on 60 trading partners, including major economies like China, India, Japan, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.

The sweeping proposal follows an investigation by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), which concluded that these nations failed to effectively prohibit or curb imports made with forced labor. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that this failure forces American workers to compete on an unlevel playing field. Under the plan, 16 partners taking partial steps will face a 10 percent levy, while the remaining 44 face a 12.5 percent duty.

The move represents a strategic effort to rebuild the administration’s broader tariff wall. This action comes after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down previous global emergency levies earlier this year
