Dutch Court Sentences Rwandan Man to Life for 1994 Genocide Role

The Hague: A Dutch court has sentenced a 67-year-old Rwandan-born Dutch citizen, identified in judicial proceedings as Eugene N., to life in prison for his role in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi minority in Rwanda.
Judges in The Hague found Eugene N. guilty of inciting and participating in war crimes and genocide, including a deadly assault on a football stadium in the southern municipality of Mbazi. According to court findings, the defendant, who held a position of local authority, led violent raids against Tutsi communities and threw a hand grenade into a crowd of displaced Tutsis who had sought refuge inside the stadium, where approximately 3,000 people were subsequently killed.
The defendant, who fled to the Netherlands in 1998 and acquired Dutch citizenship, denied all charges during the trial. Because Dutch law prevents the extradition of its citizens to face trial abroad, prosecutors launched their own investigation under universal jurisdiction, leading to his arrest and ultimate conviction.
