US Mother’s Murder Trial Puts Postpartum Psychosis In Spotlight

Massachusetts: The murder trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy, accused of killing her three young children in 2023, has brought attention back to the rare though severe psychiatric condition postpartum psychosis.
Clancy, a former maternity and delivery nurse, confessed to killing her children but pleaded not guilty, arguing that she was not criminally responsible due to serious mental illness. Her defence argues that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, bipolar disorder, and delusions when she killed her three children, aged five, three, and eight months.
Prosecutors dispute the story, claiming that Clancy was aware of what she was doing and carefully planned the deaths. Experts on both sides have given quite varied assessments of her mental state at the time.
The case sparked a wider debate about how postpartum mental diseases are identified, treated, and handled in the legal system, particularly when severe psychosis occurs after childbirth. The jury's arguments began on August 27.
