Haakon VIII Takes Throne as Norway’s New King

Oslo: Norway's Crown Prince Haakon has risen to the throne as King Haakon VIII, succeeding his father, King Harald V, who died at the age of 89 today. 'I will take the name Haakon VIII and will carry on the same motto that my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather chose: 'All for Norway', he said in a message published by the government.
When his father died, 53 years old monarch inherited the throne. Haakon had taken on more royal tasks in recent years as Harald's health declined, and he had served as regent numerous times.
Haakon, who has been the heir apparent since 1991, is recognised for his sophisticated and modest public image. He studied political science at the University of California, Berkeley, and development studies at the London School of Economics before embarking on military and diplomatic training.
His 22-year-old daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, has now been named heir apparent to the Norwegian throne under the country's gender-neutral succession procedures.
