Tokyo: According to the team and local media on Tuesday, the manager of Japan's legendary Yomiuri Giants baseball team resigned after being arrested on suspicion of assaulting his teenage daughter.
Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested 47-year-old Shinnosuke Abe at his home in Shibuya district on Monday night after receiving a report of domestic abuse from a child consultation centre. According to police, the incident happened amid a family argument between his two daughters.
Abe reportedly tried to end up a fight between his 18-year-old daughter and her younger sister, but instead he grabbed the older daughter and pushed her to the ground. He later got released after questioning.
According to local media, Abe apologised for causing disruption and admitted that he lost his temper during the incident. The case led to his quick resignation from one of Japan's most prominent athletic positions, despite the fact that the daughter was not seriously hurt and later claimed to have made peace with her father.
Shortly after the arrest, the Yomiuri Giants announced his resignation, stating that given the gravity of the situation, disciplinary action was unavoidable. While the club considers next steps, a temporary manager has been appointed.
After a stellar performing and coaching career with the Giants, Abe, a former star catcher and veteran team member, had only recently taken the role of manager.
