SEOUL: North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile southward over the Yellow Sea on Monday night, according to South Korea’s military.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced they detected the launch originating from the Tongchang-ri area, home to the North's main space center, at around 10:44 PM local time.

The missile's flight path triggered immediate emergency shelter warnings in Japan's southern Okinawa Prefecture before the warnings were lifted. Japanese authorities later reported that the projectile disappeared over the Yellow Sea, suggesting a potential flight failure.

The military action came just hours after Pyongyang notified Japan of a window to launch its second military spy satellite into orbit. It also followed a rare trilateral summit in Seoul, where the leaders of South Korea, Japan, and China held talks and jointly reaffirmed their commitment to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
