Helsinki: Finnish President Alexander Stubb has proposed a new Helsinki-style security framework for the Middle East, emphasising that any sustainable post-war settlement must include both Israel and Iran.
Speaking on the sidelines of a global security forum, Stubb argued that the region requires an inclusive, multi-lateral architecture inspired by Europe’s Cold War-era diplomacy to prevent a cycle of perpetual conflict.
The proposed framework mirrors the 1975 Helsinki Accords, which successfully lowered geopolitical tensions by bringing adversarial Western and Soviet bloc nations to the same negotiating table.
Stubb highlighted that lasting stability in the Middle East cannot be achieved through exclusion or unilateral pacts, insisting that even the most bitter regional rivals must be integrated into a single, binding security structure.
This comprehensive diplomatic model aims to address cross-border security guarantees, economic cooperation, and human rights. By establishing clear lines of communication and shared responsibilities, the initiative intends to move the region past immediate crisis management toward a institutionalised, long-term peace process supported by the international community.
