HANOI: Five teenage students tragically drowned on Sunday afternoon while swimming in a river in Vietnam's central highland province of Dak Lak, local media reported on Monday.
The victims, all eighth-grade students at a local secondary school in Krong Ana district, had gathered at the riverside for a weekend outing. According to local police reports, a group of seven students went to the Krong Ana river to swim.
Disastrously, five of the teenagers were suddenly swept away by the river's strong, fast-moving currents and quickly submerged.
Upon receiving news of the accident, district authorities immediately deployed rescue teams and local residents to the site to conduct an emergency search operation. By Sunday evening, specialized rescue forces had successfully recovered the bodies of all five missing students.
This tragic incident highlights a persistent, widespread problem in Vietnam, where child drownings remain one of the leading causes of accidental death among minors, especially during hot summer months.
