BUDAPEST: Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has kicked off an official diplomatic tour to Poland and Austria, signaling an immediate strategic effort to restore his nation's strained relations with the European mainstream.
The high-profile trip, which began on Tuesday, represents Magyar's very first foreign tour since taking office earlier this month. It marks a dramatic, symbolic shift away from the eurosceptic nationalism of his predecessor, Viktor Orbán, whose long-standing confrontational approach toward Brussels and friendly stance toward Moscow had left Budapest deeply isolated.
Magyar’s primary objective during his meetings with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw and subsequent officials in Vienna is to repair crucial regional alliances.
The new centrist leader aims to revitalize the Visegrád Group alliance and actively study Poland's successful model for restoring liberal democratic institutions. Rebuilding these core partnerships is considered a vital prerequisite for Magyar to successfully negotiate the unblocking of billions of euros in frozen European Union funds.
