Ankara: A manhunt in southern Turkey came to an end after a gunman who killed six people in Mersin province reportedly killed himself as police closed in, according to authorities and local media.
The 37-year-old suspect is thought to have carried out a series of gunshots in and around Tarsus on Monday, sparking a massive security operation across the region. According to investigators, the violence began when he allegedly shot and killed his wife in the Camliyayla district before travelling to Tarsus and firing at a restaurant from his vehicle, killing the owner and an employee. He is reportedly said to have murdered other people, including a teenager, a shepherd, and another guy, in distinct incidents as he travelled through multiple locations.
The attacks sparked widespread fear and a massive police response that included special units, helicopters, drones, and barricades around Mersin province. After hours of searching, security forces tracked the culprit down to a residence some 10 miles from the initial shooting scenes.
Officials reported that as police surrounded the building, the suspect killed himself rather than surrender, bringing the manhunt to an end. Authorities have yet to determine a clear motivation, but early indications suggest that some of the victims were involved in personal problems, including a quarrel over the restaurant targeted in the attack.
Investigations are in progress, with forensic teams and police working to reconstruct the timeline of events and determine the specific circumstances behind the shootings. The incident caused increasing anxiety in Turkey over a recent surge in gun violence, with many deaths reported in recent months.
