UN Chief Condemns Attack Near UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Plant
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over reports of a drone strike near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE.
In a statement issued on May 18, Guterres said he was “deeply alarmed” by reports that drone strikes caused a fire in an electrical generator located within the perimeter of the nuclear facility on May 17.
The UN chief reiterated his warnings against further escalation in the Middle East, stressing that the latest incident underscores the urgent need for all sides to completely halt the fighting.
He also stressed that attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, particularly nuclear facilities, are “totally unacceptable” and violate international law.
Guterres called for the incident to be strongly condemned and warned against any further attacks near nuclear power plants or other civilian sites.
