BANGOK: A freight train collided with a public bus at a central railway crossing Saturday afternoon, killing at least eight people and injuring over 20 others.
The accident occurred near the Airport Rail Link's Makkasan Station. Initial reports indicate the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority bus was stopped at a red light while still positioned across the railway tracks, preventing the crossing barriers from completely lowering. A heavy container-laden cargo train was unable to brake in time, striking the front of the bus.
Social media footage of the collision captured the train dragging the bus and several surrounding vehicles along the tracks. The violent impact caused the bus to burst into flames, which also damaged nearby cars and threw multiple motorcyclists onto the roadway.
Firefighters brought the intense blaze under control within minutes, allowing rescue teams to search the charred wreckage where all eight fatalities were recovered.
