Taiwan says is an 'independent' nation, after Trump's warning

TAIPEI: Taiwan’s government asserted its existing sovereignty Saturday after US President Donald Trump warned the island against making a formal declaration of independence.

The diplomatic friction began when President Trump stated in an interview that a formal independence declaration by Taipei would cross a ‘red line’ and trigger a catastrophic regional conflict. In response, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified its stance, stating that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is already a sovereign, independent country and therefore has no need to declare independence.

Mainland China considers the self-ruled island a breakaway province and has consistently vowed to bring it under Beijing's control, by force if necessary.

Despite the warning, President Trump reiterated that the United States remains fully committed to supporting Taiwan's defense capabilities. However, he emphasized that Washington expects Taipei to maintain the political status quo to avoid provoking military action from Beijing.
