PARIS: French Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti will travel to Algeria on Monday to improve bilateral legal cooperation and address the fate of a detained French journalist, his office announced Saturday.
The upcoming visit highlights a distinct warming trend between Paris and Algiers following a period of heightened diplomatic friction. According to the justice ministry, the primary objective of the trip is to officially open a new chapter in judicial relations between the two Mediterranean nations.
High on the minister's agenda is the ongoing detention of French journalist Christophe Gleizes, who has been held by Algerian authorities since early 2026. Rights groups, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF), have continuously petitioned for his release.
While specific details regarding potential agreements remain confidential, French officials expressed optimism that the direct ministerial dialogue will successfully resolve the journalist's case and solidify broader security and legal partnerships.
