Cannes: The legendary actor John Travolta received a surprise honorary Palme d'Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, one of the festival's greatest honours, in an emotional ceremony commemorating his decades-long contributions to cinema.

The delight tribute happened ahead of Travolta's directorial project, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, which premiered at Cannes' Debussy Theatre. The honorary award was awarded to the Hollywood veteran by festival director Thierry Frémaux, who described him as "one of the greatest artists of the 20th and 21st century." The audience replied with a long standing ovation, as Travolta was visibly moved by the recognition.

In addition to complimenting the festival and reflecting on his lengthy cinematic career, Travolta addressed the audience that the honour felt ‘beyond the Oscar.’ For almost fifty years, the actor, who starred in classic films like Saturday Night Fever, Grease, and Pulp Fiction, has been one of Hollywood's most recognisable celebrities.

‘Propeller One-Way Night Coach’, a very personal film inspired by Travolta's lifelong passion with travel and aviation, was presented at this year's Cannes festival. One of the most ambitious projects of his career, the actor wrote, directed, financed, and produced it himself. Ella Bleu Travolta, his daughter, also appears in the movie.

This year's Cannes Film Festival, which has seen high-profile premieres, tributes, and appearances from some of the most significant stars in the film industry, gained yet another significant celebrity moment thanks to the unexpected award.. Many attendees of festivals and film reviewers applauded Travolta's award, seeing it as a celebration of his ongoing fame and his impact on successive generations of performers and filmmakers.
