Texas Carries Out 600th Execution Since Death Penalty Resumption

Huntsville :A man convicted of the abduction and killing of a retired professor was executed by lethal injection on Thursday evening, marking a significant milestone in the history of capital punishment in the state.

The procedure went ahead after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a stay regarding claims of intellectual disability. In a final statement, the condemned man offered multiple apologies to the victim's family, expressing regret for the events that led to his conviction.

The case involved prolonged legal disputes concerning the mental capacity of the defendant. Although various experts had previously suggested the presence of intellectual disabilities, the courts ultimately upheld the death sentence, allowing the execution to proceed under current state law.

The sentence stemmed from an incident involving the abduction of a former educator from a car park. The victim was found to have died from suffocation after being trapped in a vehicle. The defendant was later apprehended in a different state while in possession of the victim's car and subsequently led authorities to the site where the body had been left.

This event represents the 600th time the state has carried out a death sentence since the penalty was reinstated in 1982. It is the fourth such execution in the state this year and the 12th nationwide. On the same day, another execution was carried out in a neighbouring state for a separate double-murder case.

Witnesses representing the victim's family stated that the proceedings were viewed as a matter of legal accountability and the rule of law. A co-defendant in the case remains in prison serving a life sentence.
