Afghanistan's water crisis worsened last year: UN report

Kabul: Afghanistan is grappling with a worsening water crisis as climate change and prolonged drought drive nearly 80% of the population toward severe water insecurity. A new report highlights that in the last year alone, groundwater levels in major urban centers like Kabul have dropped by several meters, leaving thousands of families without access to clean drinking water.

The crisis is fueled by a combination of erratic rainfall, the rapid melting of mountain glaciers, and a lack of modern infrastructure to manage dwindling resources.

In rural provinces, the failure of traditional irrigation systems has decimated crops, pushing millions into acute food insecurity. International aid agencies warn that the situation is being exacerbated by the country’s economic isolation, which has stalled vital water management projects.

As wells run dry, experts fear a surge in waterborne diseases and mass displacement as families are forced to migrate in search of habitable land.
