President Trump Heads to China for High-Stakes Talks With Xi
US President Donald Trump departed aboard Air Force One on Tuesday for a major visit to China, marking the first trip by a US president to the country in nearly a decade.
President Trump has scheduled to hold talks on Thursday and Friday with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing as both sides attempt to manage tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Trade is expected to dominate discussions, including tariffs, technology restrictions, rare earth minerals, agriculture, and investment cooperation. Officials from both countries are also expected to discuss extending agreements aimed at easing economic tensions after months of trade disputes.
The summit is also likely to address several sensitive geopolitical issues, including Taiwan, artificial intelligence, nuclear security, and the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Taiwan remains one of the most contentious issues between Washington and Beijing, with China strongly opposing increased US military support and arms sales to the self-governed island.
Iran is also expected to feature prominently during the talks as the United States seeks stability in global energy markets following disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East. China remains one of Iran’s key economic partners and a major buyer of Iranian oil.
Trump described the upcoming meeting as an important opportunity to strengthen communication between the two countries despite ongoing disagreements over trade and security matters.
The visit is Trump’s first trip to China since 2017 and comes at a time of heightened global economic uncertainty and increasing strategic rivalry between Washington and Beijing
