Colombo, Sri Lanka: Former Sri Lankan minister Keheliya Rambukwella was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly aiding the theft of a sacred antique stone from a royal palace. Anti-corruption officials stated he conspired to steal the historic artifact.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption detained Rambukwella over the December 2022 removal of a carved granite "moonstone". The sacred relic formed part of the palace entrance for King Veera Parakrama Narendrasinghe.
Authorities revealed that Rambukwella obstructed initial police inquiries while serving as a cabinet minister. Additionally, he faces charges for misusing state funds to employ six personal business workers.
The arrest coincides with separate court proceedings involving the former health minister. He stands accused of authorizing the procurement of counterfeit cancer medications that turned out to be water.
