Dubai has introduced tighter regulations governing commercial shopfront signage as part of wider efforts to improve the emirate’s urban appearance, reduce visual clutter and enhance road safety.
The new guidelines, announced under directives from the Dubai Civility Committee, require businesses to follow updated technical and visual standards covering the size, placement, lighting and design of storefront signage.
According to the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, each commercial establishment will now be permitted to display only one trade name on its shopfront, with multiple advertisements or trade names prohibited.
The updated regulations form part of the Outdoor Advertising Manual introduced in 2024 by the Roads and Transport Authority and Dubai Municipality in coordination with Mada Media.
Under the new standards, trade-name signs must be installed horizontally rather than vertically, with Arabic text positioned above English. Businesses are also restricted to a single projecting sign from one side only.
The manual further outlines requirements to ensure visual consistency across commercial areas. Signage dimensions must remain proportionate to the size of the storefront and avoid excessive width, height or thickness.
Authorities have also imposed stricter lighting controls, including limits on brightness levels and restrictions on bright white backgrounds. Animated displays, moving images and video-based signage are not permitted under the updated framework.
The regulations additionally prohibit signage installations on balconies or on the exterior facades of offices, clinics and businesses located above ground-floor level.
DET said it will oversee the issuance of permits and conduct inspections to ensure businesses comply with the approved standards.
Officials said the measures support the objectives of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which focuses on improving the city’s visual identity, urban aesthetics and overall quality of life.
Businesses and stakeholders have been encouraged to review the full technical requirements outlined in Section 3.4 of the Outdoor Advertising Manual, available through RTA Dubai.
