President Trump says will discuss US arms sales to Taiwan with China's Xi
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he plans to discuss US arms sales to Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming visit to China this week.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the trip, US President Trump acknowledged China’s opposition to US military support for Taiwan, stating that the issue would be among several topics raised during talks with President Xi.
“I’m going to have that discussion with President Xi. President Xi would like us not to, and I’ll have that discussion. That’s one of the many things I’ll be talking about,” Trump said.
The remarks drew attention because longstanding US policy has generally avoided consulting Beijing directly regarding arms support decisions involving Taiwan. The United States maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan and has continued supplying defensive weapons to the island under existing US law, despite objections from China.
Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has consistently opposed foreign arms sales or military cooperation involving the island. Taiwan, meanwhile, maintains its own government and democratic system and has sought continued international support amid rising regional tensions.
US President Trump’s upcoming visit to Beijing is expected to include discussions on trade, regional security, and broader US-China relations, with Taiwan likely to remain a sensitive issue between the two global powers.
