JERUSALEM:Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu aims to transition Israel away from U.S. military aid within a decade, seeking to reduce financial dependence to zero. Speaking on ‘60 Minutes,’ he emphasised a desire to reset bilateral ties immediately rather than waiting for political shifts in Congress.
This strategic pivot coincides with ongoing regional tensions involving Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have spiked global fuel prices. Consequently, Netanyahu is prioritizing stronger economic and diplomatic ties with Gulf nations to enhance regional stability and security.
While Israel currently receives approximately $3.8 billion annually in U.S. aid as part of a $38 billion decade-long agreement Netanyahu believes the time is right for a ‘reset.’
This move reflects an effort to maintain Israel's self-reliance while navigating shifting geopolitical alliances and the economic fallout of regional conflict.
