BERLIN: The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has reached a political milestone, emerging as the country's most popular party in two recent national surveys.

For the first time, the far-right party has overtaken Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative CDU-CSU alliance. The polls indicate a significant shift in the German political landscape, with the AfD securing 27% of the projected vote, a notable rise from the 20.8% it achieved in the February general election.

In contrast, Chancellor Merz’s CDU-CSU has slipped to 24%, while the SPD remains stagnant at 13%. This surge is particularly dominant in eastern Germany, where support for the AfD has climbed as high as 39%.

Voter dissatisfaction appears to be the primary driver, as approval for Chancellor Merz’s leadership has plummeted to 29%. With five key state elections approaching in 2026, the AfD's growing momentum poses a major challenge to Germany's traditional political coalitions and the stability of the current government.
