Starmer faces ‘last chance’ to hold Labour support as mutiny grows

LONDON: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing a defining moment as he delivers a high-stakes "last chance" speech to quell a growing mutiny within the Labour Party. This internal turmoil follows the controversial vetting of Lord Peter Mandelson, which has reignited tensions between the party’s leadership and its restless backbenchers.

Starmer’s premiership is under intense scrutiny as senior figures, including Andy Burnham and Angela Rayner, are reportedly being positioned as potential successors. Beyond party infighting, Starmer must also confront the rising electoral threat from Reform UK and the far-right, whose populist rhetoric is capitalising on public disillusionment.

With his authority under fire from both his own MPs and external political shifts, the Prime Minister’s address is viewed as a desperate attempt to restore unity and prove he can lead Britain through an increasingly volatile political landscape.
