Wellington: A rare celestial traveler is currently streaking across the sky, offering a once-in-a-lifetime viewing opportunity. Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) has become visible to observers, specifically across Australia and New Zealand.

This ancient comet follows a massive orbit, meaning it has not visited the inner solar system in approximately 170,000 years.

The comet is distinguished by a striking blue-green glow. Scientists state this color is produced when dicarbon and cyanogen gases are heated by the sun. As the ice-bound object approaches the inner solar system, these gases expand to create a glowing ‘coma’ and a visible tail.

Currently, the object appears as a fuzzy light near the horizon during the early morning hours. Astronomers are monitoring its path closely as it moves from the Oort Cloud toward its closest point to Earth.

Because of its long orbital period, the comet will not return to our region of space for another 170 millennia. For residents in the Southern Hemisphere, the coming days represent the final chance to witness this rare piece of cosmic history.
