Meiringen: Around 60 devotees of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London gathered at the thundering Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland to reenact the legendary duel between the great detective and Professor Moriarty.
Dressed in authentic Victorian-era tweed, lavish dresses, and top hats, the group marked the 135th anniversary of the fictional clash that supposedly claimed the lives of both characters on May 4, 1891.
The pilgrims made their way up to a precarious ledge via funicular, overlooking the 120-meter falls in Meiringen. Members assumed the identities of various characters from the Arthur Conan Doyle canon, including the King of Bohemia and the landlady Mrs. Hudson, transforming the spray-filled atmosphere into a living stage.
For the participants, the immersion served as a way to connect deeply with the 'Victorian atmosphere' and the 'triumph of good over evil' found within the stories.
The highlight of the three-day journey was the physical recreation of the struggle depicted in Sidney Paget's famous 1893 illustration. Actors playing Holmes and Moriarty grappled on the ledge before seemingly tumbling into the abyss, followed by a moving performance of Dr. Watson discovering the detective's farewell note.
The emotional weight of the scene reportedly brought tears to the eyes of onlookers who traveled from as far as the United States and France to attend.
While Doyle originally intended for ‘The Adventure of the Final Problem’ to be the end of his hero, the public refusal to accept Holmes's death eventually forced the author to resurrect him.
This anniversary event, which also celebrated the 75th year of the London society, demonstrates that the fascination with the "minutiae" of Holmes’s world remains a powerful force for fans across the globe today.
