Abu Dhabi : Abu Dhabi based space technology firm Orbitworks is planning to invest $1 billion to expand its satellite network, marking a major step in the United Arab Emirates’ push to strengthen its position in the global space industry.
The company aims to deploy a large constellation of satellites over the next five years, beginning with its first launch scheduled for October, followed by additional launches in the coming year. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to build an advanced, AI-powered Earth observation system capable of monitoring environmental and climate-related changes.
Orbitworks’ expansion follows its first contract with a European government, including a recent agreement with France’s space agency to manufacture and launch satellites. The deal is expected to enhance the company’s credibility on the international stage while supporting the UAE’s ambition to become one of the world’s leading space economies.
The company, which is linked to Abu Dhabi’s International Holding Company, has already invested around $200 million in a satellite manufacturing facility in the emirate. The plant is capable of producing up to 10 satellites annually, with plans to scale production significantly as the project advances.
Orbitworks is also developing what it calls the “Altair” satellite constellation, which will use space-based sensors and artificial intelligence to monitor deforestation, track climate patterns and support disaster response efforts. The system is expected to play a key role in improving environmental monitoring and data-driven decision-making.
The company is currently exploring funding options for the $1 billion investment, including potential backing from government entities in Abu Dhabi and international partners.
